Birdwatching involves something a bit more than just staring at birds all day. A lot of people like to write down where they've seen each bird, along with all the circumstances. This is why Scythebill is something every birdwatcher will be interested in. The software gives you the possibility of recording each encounter you have with different bird species and review them on the fly at any time. The software can import data from BirdBase, eBird, Avisys and other databases, which can help you keep track of countless bird sightings besides your own.

Downloading and installing Scythebill shouldn't take more than a minute, even on older machines. The software is compatible with all popular Windows versions, and it doesn't require any special tools or services. It comes completely free of charge, with no hidden fees or restrictions.

Scythebill is something more than just a blank database in which you fill in a series of input fields. The software already includes a huge amount of information, so you only need to link the relevant information when you're creating a new entry. The process involves specifying when and where you've spotted a bird, which is made easy by the that Scythebill automatically sets the latitude and longitude, marks it on a map, and fills in other details, according to the specified city.

Since the program has its own species database, you only need to select one when defining a new spotting entry. What's more, Scythebill lets you make a wide range of specifications, like if the bird is domesticated or not, if it belongs to a certain group, if it's male or female or if it has other characteristics. Of course, you can also add pictures of the bird if you have them. The best part is that everything is done just by clicking checkboxes or selecting options in drop-down menus. You will never encounter messages that something can not be done because a piece of information is missing in another place.

If you wish to review your encounters, you can explore your entries in various ways. The software lets you pull up a list with all your encounters, but you can also browse all the species in the database and see which ones you've encountered. Another thing you can do is browse through various locations in the world and see your different encounters, on a map, when you select a certain place.

It may not look like much on the surface, but any birdwatcher will definitely appreciate Scythebill for its comprehensive filing and sorting system.

Pros

You can catalog all the bird species you encounter. The software lets you review your encounters in various ways. It comes with its own database, and it lets you import from others, which makes everything quite easy.

Cons

The user interface could use a more modern design.
